The Age: Metro Trains rated Australia's worst

THE AGE: METRO Trains has been voted the worst city rail system in the country, according to a commuter satisfaction survey.

Metro came last in all surveyed categories, which included reliability and performance, comfort of trains, safety, timetables and scheduling, and signage and announcements.

The survey of 2500 Australian commuters, conducted by independent research group Canstar Cannex, compared train passenger satisfaction between Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Adelaide and Queensland rail systems.

''Victorians are the grumpiest commuters, with 55 per cent of those surveyed believing overcrowding was substantially impacting their quality of life, compared with only 27 per cent of South Australians," the survey group's head of research said.

Why is Zone 2 not removed completely and why is it that people whom travel further by public transport into the city instead of clogging the roads with their cars are they punished at least $10 a day to come in and out of the city.

When do you believe public transport rationalization will be bought seriously into the carbon solution mix

Every time I read complaints about stations, they are not complaints about stations at all: they are complaints about feral bogans who live in the outer suburbs, several of which are your constituents.

The worst problem plaguing Melbourne stations is not that they are unattended. It is convoluted and passenger-unfriendly entrances and exits.
Walk the length of a train to get out, then walk back again to get to your car or the bus stop.
Pull down all the fences and have multiple entry and exit points everywhere.
In the age of the myki scanner, that works: place scanners at multiple locations, but topup machines at just one spot on each platform.
All stations which have only subway access should have ground-level access
too: either fulltime, or emergency.
If unattended stations can't have open toilets because of the crime risk, fit them with French-style waist-height pissoirs.
DoT has never yet designed an effective bus-train interchange. Luckily the expensive Ringwood one was shelved: one more bad but overpriced design.
DoT has never yet designed a station which is convenient for passengers and operationally efficient.
Southern Cross, Laverton and Westall are overpriced and badly designed for every purpose.
Roxburgh Park looks like Pentridge J wing reincarnated: just the spot to make a crime movie. The Footscray footbridge is not only a mismatched eyesore, it is very cumbersome to use.

Before improving stations, improve services. A cheerless station will have less impact if one doesn't have to wait 40 min for a train.

The whole electric system can sustain 20 min headways today, as can Melton and Sunbury (but not Stony Point). That should be the minimum standard during all operating hours.
Over half of the system can sustain 10 min headways today. That should be the minimum standard Mon.-Fri. daytime.
The busiest lines can sustain better than that, and are doing so Mon.-Fri.
peaks.

This morning the 6.28 PAKENHAM line was delayed and after that it was a total, even on sunday afternoon the 23rd of july, the pakenham line to the city was delayed for 10 minutes, and they was no apology made, METRO thinks its doing us a big favour, we are full fare paying passengers for heaven sake.
Narre warren station needs an URGENT upgrade and the electrolic signs too, and a clock too.
The MONTHLY COMPENSATION NOTICE TO ALL METRO CUSTOMERS, needs to be put near the front ticketing office in Narre warren station where all customers can see it and apply for monthly compensation accordingly. Instead it is put in some dark corner near the exit, where noone cares to read or apply, Is that what METRO is hoping that customers dont apply, even the compensation given takes roughly 2 months to process, which is too long.
Thanks
